Book Review of Belt of Truth

Belt of Truth
Armor of God Book 1
Story and Pictures by Theresa Linden

Theresa Linden’s Book Series Armor of God is based on the Armor of God mentioned in the Bible. Book 1, The Belt of Truth, is a story about George Pennington’s mastery of this first Armor in Knight School. His ultimate desire was to be a Knight. It was difficult to get into Knight School and he tried several times. When he finally made it in, he would do anything to stay there.

After he accidentally burned his mother’s tapestry, he realized that they may not be able to afford next year’s tuition. As the story progresses, George thinks that lying will get him out of these situations that continue to arise until something drastic helps him make the ultimate decision.

This was a great story, especially for children who just received First Communion and Confession as the Main character mentions his first sacraments. The story was engaging and kept my attention from chapter to chapter. The characters were relatable. While I loved George, my second favorite was his new friend Robyn.

Brother Coll’s Catechism Lessons are an excellent addition after each chapter. This was a nice tie to connect faith with everyday situations.

Theresa Linden did a great job with this captivating book and I’m anxious to see how George fairs in the rest of the series. Go get your copy:  https://www.amazon.com/Belt-Truth-Theresa-Linden/dp/0997674784

Another way to get the book is by participating in our contest! Theresa Linden generously offered an autographed copy of The Belt of Truth. One lucky winner will receive it. Keep on the lookout for more details.

April Update

I had to take a 2 week break from working on the magazine. Many of you know that I have written a book called Angel Donor which was based on my middle child's experience on needing a liver transplant. her younger brother has been dealing with chronic kidney failure since he was born. Well on April 16 at the age of 14, he recieved a kidney transplant. I love the fact that it occurred during Holy Week. It truly is a season of "New Life".

Since this happened I wasn't able to work on the magazine. However, I plan to merge May and June issues together into a spring issue. Authors and illustrators, keep those submissions coming :)  Readers, stay tuned for the next issue!

April 2019

The April issue of My Light is up. As you may recall we had a brief writing contest in March. Our winner, Tom Medlar, was recently awarded the Amazon gift card and publication in My Light Magazine. His winning story, "The Silver Horn of Adorini,"  has a fresh take on the relationship between a child and their guardian angel.

I took some time to ask Tom some questions about his writing. You can also find the interview here.

***************

Author Tom Medlar was the winner of My Light Magazine’s first writing contest. Part of his prize was publication in My Light Magazine’s April issue. I caught up with him to ask him a few questions.

My Light:  Thank you for joining us Tom. And  congratulations on winning the contest. Tell us a little about yourself. How long have you been writing and what inspires you?

Tom Medlar: I am married to Joanie and am a step-father to Amy and Joe, and a grandfather to Ella and Kieran. I have worked as a psychotherapist for 36 years, and work with adults of all ages in nursing facilities. I’m a Lector at Sacred Heart Church in Middleboro, MA. I have published professional articles, but my interest now is spiritual writing. I am inspired by the communicating closeness of God.

TMMost enjoyable are the gifts of insight and fresh language that sometimes drop before you on the page. The challenge for me is to find the time and energy for writing amidst a busy life.

ML: I can certainly relate to that! What would you say to an author or illustrator who might be doubting their ability right now?

TM:  Don’t attend to those hypnotic, automatic thoughts; they are not helpful, and are not even personal: they are universally common artifacts of our anxious human nature. Just say a brief prayer, and work.

ML: How has your faith impacted your writing?

TMMy faith is the full purpose and inspiration for the writing I have done and aspire to do. Seeking fresh ways of communicating that to others.
Thank you Tom!

My Light Magazine Hosts a #writingcontest

My Light Magazine is proud to announce they are hosting their first #writingcontest !

See the flyer below for all the details. You can also visit the Writer's Guidelines on www.mylightkids.com for things we regularly look for in submissions. Writing contests are good for practicing the skill of adhering to guidelines including word count and style.

The reason we are hosting (and hope to contine to host) the contest is because we are trying to find a way to keep the magazine free for readers, yet allow us to pay our talented contributors.

So check it out and give it a try.

St Patrick's Day will be here soon! Lent is just around the corner. With all this, we have been busy preparing for the March 2019 issue. Since Lent begins March 6, we focoused on the sacrament of Confession. Be sure to check out our Pocket Guide to Confession.  It has a guide to the steps of Confession as well as a helpful tool to examine the conscience.

We have a wonderful addition to our Saints section from our new contributor, Viki Heagy. (Welcome Viki!) Viki gives us some information on who St. Patrick was and what we know about him.

Be sure to stop by My Light to see our other featured work this month. On the front page we have our usual PDF link or feel free to brouse the site.

We are knee-deep in the middle of February, but here at My Light, we are already focused on March and April.  If you would like to contribute, our Theme List and Guidelines have moved to our new website.
